About Us
Our Mission
The East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition works to reduce mass incarceration and uphold the basic human rights of those incarcerated at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and their families. We believe that only those who truly pose a risk should be incarcerated, and that facilities must be safe for both workers and those under state control.
We advance solutions through education, advocacy, transparency, and accountability — collaborating with criminal justice coalitions across the region to push for meaningful, lasting reform.
What We Stand For
Human Dignity
Incarcerated individuals must be treated as human beings. We reject conditions that strip people of their dignity and call for accountability when harm occurs inside the facility.
Transparency
The public has a right to know what happens inside EBR Parish Prison. We call for the regular public posting of all incidents of injury or death, and for open reporting that builds trust between the facility and the community.
Community Oversight
We advocate for the creation of a citizens' review board to provide independent oversight of the prison, ensuring that those impacted by the system have a voice in how it operates.
Engagement
Reform requires ongoing dialogue. We call for regular meetings between the Coalition and Metro Council Members to keep prison conditions and policy at the forefront of local governance.
How We Advance Change
Our work is grounded in education, advocacy, transparency, and accountability. We collaborate with criminal justice coalitions to amplify the voices of those directly impacted by incarceration and to push for systemic reform at the parish level.
