Our History & Leadership — East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition

How We Began

The East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition was founded by community members, families of incarcerated individuals, and criminal justice advocates who recognized an urgent need for change at the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Driven by a shared commitment to human dignity, the coalition came together to challenge mass incarceration and demand accountability from those who run the facility.

From its earliest days, the coalition has operated as a grassroots force — rooted in the belief that those closest to the problem are best positioned to drive solutions. Through public education, direct advocacy, and coalition-building with other criminal justice organizations, EBRPPRC has worked to elevate the voices of incarcerated people and their loved ones.

The coalition's founding demands remain at the center of its work: full reporting of all incidents of injury or death at the facility, public transparency around those incidents, the creation of a citizens' review board, and regular meetings between the coalition and Metro Council Members.
