How We Work
Our Approach
The East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition advances solutions through four interconnected strategies: education, advocacy, transparency, and accountability. Every action we take is grounded in the belief that incarcerated individuals deserve to be treated as human beings, and that facilities must be safe for both workers and those under state control.
We believe only those who truly pose a risk should be incarcerated. Our work re-imagines public safety by centering the voices of directly impacted families and collaborating with criminal justice coalitions across the parish.
Collaboration & Coalition Building
We work hand-in-hand with criminal justice coalitions, community organizations, and concerned residents. By building broad alliances, we amplify the call for reform and ensure that the people most affected by mass incarceration lead the conversation.
Our coalition regularly engages with Metro Council Members, pushing for consistent dialogue between elected officials and the communities they serve. We believe sustained relationships between policymakers and advocates are essential to lasting change.
Education & Advocacy
We equip community members with the knowledge they need to demand change. Through public events, video content, and direct outreach, we shine a light on conditions inside East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and the broader impact of mass incarceration on families and neighborhoods.
Our advocacy focuses on four core demands: mandatory reporting of all incidents of injury or death at the facility, public posting of those incidents, creation of a citizens' review board, and regular meetings between the Coalition and Metro Council Members.
Transparency & Accountability
We call on East Baton Rouge Parish Prison to report all incidents of injury or death of those held at the facility and to post those incidents publicly on a regular basis. Transparency is not optional — it is a fundamental obligation to the public.
We push for the creation of a citizens' review board to provide independent oversight. Without community-driven accountability mechanisms, the system cannot earn the trust of the people it is meant to serve.
